About Wood Species & Finishes
- White Oak
Coloration of White Oak will vary from a light brown to a grayish tint in the heartwood. There are two shades of ochre in the sapwood.
The wood rays are more pronounced and longer than in Red Oak. All of the White Oaks are heavy, very hard, and strong. Any knots will be very
small and well scattered.
- White Birch
This wood can vary from light brown tinged with either pinkish or grayish undertones with a thin, nearly white sapwood. It is a close-grained
wood with a distinct, but not prominent pattern.
- Knotty Pine
Knotty Pine is a very soft wood with distinct knots and grain characteristics. It tends to be a light yellowish color that will vary to off-white
at spots to a very dark brown in the area of the knot. Knotty Pine is very easily marred and dented. Some knots may be split (saw-cut) but will
always be stable in nature.
- Cherry
Most people visualize Cherry with a reddish brown color. This is the tone most often seen in Cherry furniture. Some Cherry has a distinctively
grayish cast, others have a light straw color. Freshly cut heartwood is usually light amber in tone, but darkens considerably with age & exposure to
sunlight. Cherry sapwood is even lighter in color, from white to a light cherry brown. Cherry Cherry also often has black "pitch marks" which appear as
a small dark colored line. This is not a defect but inherent to Cherry wood. Cherry is strong, stiff and moderately hard.
- Walnut
Walnut varies from light gray-brown to chocolate brown, even to a dark purplish brown. Grain patterns will vary strongly from piece to piece and can be
very plain or highly figured.
